This biographical dictionary of Huntington artists began simply enough, with a fairly basic question: how many artists have worked in Huntington since it was founded? This question, and the subsequent research upon it, led to the creation of this publication, which documents approximately 600 artists of every kind who have lived and worked in Huntington since 1871. Huntington has been fortunate enough during its existence to have had a number of important artists whose careers either began or ended her, and this new publication is meant to help reveal their lives and contributions to our vibrant community. It also serves as a record of all the minor artists who passed through our city, and for the first time brings their names together with their more prominent counterparts. This new publication is meant to serve as a resource for historians, teachers, researchers, dealers, and collectors interested in the history of art in West Virginia and the surrounding area.
Geoffery K. Fleming is the Executive Director of the Huntington Museum of Art in Huntington, West Virginia. He serves as a grant reviewer for a number of national organizations, including the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH), and as an accreditation reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). He specializes in the art and history of Long Island, New York, and has curated a number of exhibitions and is the author or co-author of two dozen books and catalogs on the subject, including the award-winning publication, A Shared Aesthetic: Artists of Long Island's North Fork.
