The newts you will find roaming Appalachia are eastern newts (Notophthalmus viridescens). The newt pictured here is currently in the awkward teenage "red eft" stage of the newt's lifecycle. After a few years of wandering the forest floor, these little red-orange newts will find a pond to settle down in and adopt their adult olive green coloration and a body morphology better adapted to a mostly aquatic lifestyle.
