The American woodcock (Scolopax minor) is a funny bird. They produce a range of strange noises, they do a little dance when they walk, and they look a little goofy. And woodcock isn't even their funniest name; they're also known as timberdoodles, becasse, Labrador twisters, night partridges, hokumpokes, and bogsuckers. They live throughout most of eastern North America and as such are frequent inhabitants of Appalachia. In the spring you can see and hear these fantastic little birds around dawn and dusk as the males begin courtship behaviors to woo the nearby females.
